One of the common consequences of mental health problems is social isolation. Sometimes this may result from the mental health problem itself. Reasons may also include low income and lack of self-confidence. A further major problem is the stigma (or negative attitudes) which society holds towards people who use mental health services. These can affect the contact service users have with others (including employers), may further undermine self confidence and can prevent people from seeking the help they need. This is doubly sad because these negative attitudes most often disappear when people get to know each other personally.
The Mary Frances Trust is committed to supporting members to become fully active members of their communities and to have access to all the opportunities this offers. We therefore work with other local organisations, particularly the Richmond Fellowship, to enable our members to access:-
- Education courses at every level (adult education, further education, degree and postgraduate level as required). For more details, please see the page on Learning New Skills
- Sports and Leisure opportunities (this includes sports teams, taster sessions and membership of the local gym and slimming clubs)
- Activities which give people meaning in their lives for instance through involvement with a faith community or political group
If you would like to know more about any of these activities, please contact us on Tel: 01372 375400
