Changes to our Volunteer Recruitment Process

At MFT, volunteers play a vital role in helping us support our communities. We're incredibly grateful to everyone who gives their time, energy and compassion to support our work. We have always taken great care in selecting volunteers whose values, enthusiasm and approach align with our organisation, the responsibilities of their role, and, where relevant, the needs of the people we support. As part of our ongoing commitment to safeguarding, wellbeing and professional boundaries, we've recently introduced changes to our volunteer recruitment process.

What Has Changed?

Previously, we recruited volunteers both internally from our client base and externally through local volunteer agencies and direct applications from members of the public.
Under our updated policy, current clients are no longer eligible to apply for volunteer roles within our Community Connections Volunteer Team or for Trustee positions.
In addition, former clients interested in volunteering with MFT must now wait a minimum of six months after their support has ended before applying to volunteer with us.

Why We Have Introduced This Change

These changes have been made to help ensure:

Appropriate professional boundaries

Confidentiality and safeguarding

The wellbeing of both clients and volunteers

Clarity between client and volunteer roles

The six-month period provides time for reflection and adjustment following support, while also helping to avoid any potential conflicts of interest or blurred boundaries.

We recognise that many former clients may wish to give back to the organisation after positive experiences with our services. However, it is important that we approach any transition from client to volunteer carefully and responsibly.

How Applications Will Be Considered

Applications from former clients will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

As part of this process, MFT may carry out a risk assessment depending on an individual’s previous history with us and their current circumstances. We will also consider the nature of the services previously received alongside the responsibilities of the volunteer role being applied for.

Where necessary, we reserve the right to extend the six-month break period in order to safeguard both the individual and the integrity of our services.

Exploring Other Volunteering Opportunities

We strongly believe volunteering can have a positive impact in many different ways — from building confidence and developing new skills to creating friendships and exploring future career opportunities.

For clients interested in volunteering opportunities outside of MFT, our staff team can provide information and guidance through our new MFT Guide to Volunteering.
